A day in the life of an Ashtangi in Mysore

Life is really rough here. It goes something like this:

Wake up really really early. Walk to the shala and practice for an hour and a half. Spend fifteen or twenty minutes after class having a coconut (there is a truck that pulls up at that hour full of them) and chatting with fellow students. Head home and shower. Either meet some friends for breakfast or hang out at home and read. Maybe do some laundry. Check email. Meet friends for lunch or pop into a cafe and spend the next two hour talking to people you just met. Head home for awhile and relax, read. Probably take a second shower because you've sweat so much. Around dusk, head out for a second coconut. Maybe have a light dinner and spend another hour or two chatting with people you just met. Head home for another round of reading. Bed by 10pm.

Repeat.

No wonder I don't want to leave! Oh wait, this is more or less exactly what I'll be doing in San Francisco in July. I'd better enjoy it while it lasts.

One of the popular breakfast spots for ashtangis.

The coconut stand at the center of Gokulam. This is where the action is!
